OVERVIEW

Asthma is a respiratory disease that makes it difficult to breathe. It is caused by inflammation in the airways and airway constriction (swelling) that prevent oxygen from traveling out of the lungs.

CAUSES & SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of asthma include chest pain or tightness, wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.

DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

Most symptoms of asthma are treated with the use of corticosteroids, usually as inhalers. Your doctor will determine what additional treatment is right for you based on your diagnosis.
